Hospitality Begins with an Invitation

Community

5 Jul

Hospitality begins with an invitation.  If you are new to Biblical Hospitality, that might seem overwhelming or scary.  It takes a bold step with the conviction that Christ is enough.

You are obeying Christ’s command in Romans 12:13, “Pursue hospitality”.

“It’s not a question.  In fact, pursue is a strong verb that implies constant or continuous action, a proactive decision.  This verse doesn’t suggest that some people have the gift of hospitality while others lack it.  No, we’re all meant to be in the habit of pursuing hospitality.  It’s a command to love others well in a tangible way”.  Jen Schmidt, “Just Open the Door”

A Decision to Pursue Hospitality

The invitation is just the beginning.  It is life changing and requires a mindset and heart shift.  Trust me, your life will never be the same again.  You will see people in a different way.

It goes to the very heart of who God is.  The hospitable God who extended love, grace, and mercy to us.  He pursued us to death on a cross and gave us what we could never give ourselves.  He paid it all.

Come Just as You Are

Opening our door, saying come on in.  Inviting others into our imperfect life to sit at our table and share a meal.  To share in the intimacy of that moment is what God intended for His Children and His Church.

It’s saying you belong.  You matter.  I care.  You are valuable.

Be a Blessing

Be generous.  Everything that we have, we have been given by God.  Lavish it on others and let them see God’s love in action.  Words are nice, but actions say so much more.

How to Practice Hospitality

Hospitality begins with an invitation and if it is your first invitation, begin small.  Invite a few friends over for dessert.  Make it very casual.  Focus on the guests and making a connection.

The Challenge

Everyday we as believers are presented with the opportunity to extend the love, grace, and mercy to others.

  1. Pray and ask God to open your heart and your eyes to see the needs of people you encounter.
  2. Pursue hospitality.
  3. Be generous.

Hospitality begins with an invitation.  My prayer is that you will allow God to pursue biblical hospitality as a way of life.
