You can learn how to practice hospitality when you’re not a cook. Even though you may not know how to cook, you can learn.
In today’s internet world, there are tons of resources, websites, and videos available to teach the beginner cook. Cooking does not have to be overwhelming or seem impossible. You can begin with a simple, easy-to-follow recipe.
My recommendation is to begin with a simple, easy method to practice hospitality when you’re not a cook. Begin with the crock pot.
The Crock Pot:
It requires little preparation time, a few ingredients, and a few tools to get started.
Crock Pot Roast
- 1 3-5 lb Chuck Roast
- 1 bag Baby Carrots
- 3 Medium Potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 Medium Onion, cut into chunks
- 2 Stalks Celery, sliced
- 2 cups Beef Broth
Add roast to crock pot. Wash baby carrots, peel and dice potatoes, peel onion and cut into chunks. Add all ingredients to the crock pot.
Add beef broth to crock pot.
Turn crock pot on and set to 8 hours. Place lid on crock pot.
Add a healthy side dish of steamed broccoli or a tossed salad.
If there are leftovers, you can shred the roast and serve it on buns with potato chips and pickles.
This is my go to recipe to take when a family has a baby or someone in the family has surgery or has been hospitalized. It meets their need and keeps things simple. Check out my other post, Serve a Family Whose Family Member is Having Surgery https://biblicalhospitality.com/?p=307&preview=true
I keep a supply of the aluminum containers on hand to transport the food. This makes it easy so they don’t have to worry about returning the dish.
Easy and Convenient
When providing the food for the family, I also provide the paper plates, napkins, eating utensils, cups, and drinks. The family can enjoy the meal and everything can be tossed for a quick cleanup so the family has one last thing to worry about.
Transporting the Food
I use my large Thirty One bags when transporting the food. I place a large bath towel in the bottom which catches the liquid if there are any spills. Also, the food doesn’t move around in car.
